How do you know if you have a dental emergency and know when to call your dentist in Jay, FL?jay, florida dentist

What Do I Do in a Dental Emergency?

In the event that you have a dental emergency, the first thing you should do is call our office immediately. That way, we can hopefully schedule an appointment for the same or next day to make sure you’re treated as soon as possible. The following are common dental emergencies and what you can do until you’re seen in our office:

Severe Tooth Pain

Sudden and sharp tooth pain is usually caused by severe tooth decay or an abscess. Take over the counter pain relievers to help with the pain. You can also use a cold compress on your jaw where the pain is to try and assist with pain and handle any swelling

Knocked-Out Tooth

If you get a tooth knocked out, try your best to retrieve it. Be careful to avoid touching the tooth root, and pick it up by the crown. Gently rinse off any dirt or debris and put it in a cup of either saliva or milk. This can help preserve the tooth, and we may be able to replace it. If not, we have other tooth replacement options that we can provide.

Chipped or Broken Tooth

Similar to a knocked-out tooth, if there’s a large chip or break, try to retrieve the piece of the tooth that was broken off. If the roots are exposed, avoid touching them. There are various methods to fix a chip or break, depending on how severe it is.

Dental Restoration Breaking or Falling Out

Dental restorations include dental crowns, fillings, bridges, and dentures. If your crown or filling falls out or breaks, don’t attempt to put it back in yourself. The dentist will create a new filling or crown to replace it. If a dental bridge or other device is broken, bring it with you to the appointment. Your dentist will see if they want to repair the restoration or fit you with a new one.
